The shape of underwear fascinates me: it’s designed to cover, but often doesn’t quite manage to. The hairs that fall outside the lines of the fabric seem almost an act of resistance against the imposed form. I don’t follow those rules, and I capture how these small deviations exist alongside what is meant to conceal them.
A study of the alienation that arises when the human body transforms into something else. Intrigued by the association with ‘creatures’, in this photo series I explore when a human’s posture becomes more ‘creature’ than person.
Alongside the photography, I made a sculpture that further explores the transition from human to creature. The object gives physical form to the alienation. A tangible representation of this ‘missing link’ between human and nature.
When a limb protrudes from under the cloth – detached from the body it belongs to – an isolated form emerges. Together with the cloth, it seems to take on an identity of its own. You see how the body folds and shapes itself into something soft and vulnerable. As if the body part could behave autonomously.
These domestic sculptures are new beings, built from skin and fabric.
